I have been reading some blog / emails I get from various theologians and some ministries.  Lately I have read a few from a teacher / preacher that I have admired over the years up until currently.  He is into the America is founded as a Christian Nation and we have to take America back for God type thing.  In his posts he has mentioned the idea that America is in covenant with God and hints that this is a covenant that God is bound to.  The 'if my people pray.. I'll heal the land" type thing.  I am troubled by this because I do not see anywhere in the scriptures that God was going to make an additional covenant after the one He made in / through Jesus Christ.  There is no mention of a covenant with a country.  Now, I think the early founding fathers, from what I have read, believed they were making a covenant with God, but that's the point!..They made it.   God is not obligated in any fashion to a covenant He didn't initiate and there is no indication that God is interesting in covenanting with a people besides the covenant that has been made through Jesus Christ with His people / the church.  Peter says somewhere, the church is a holy nation, a royal priesthood...etc.  But no where does it mention that a country will have a covenant with God. Or a nation will become God's nation.

In reading, I am aware that some early settlers believed that America was the New Israel, therefore all the promises of land and blessing and so forth is America's to claim.  The prayer in 2 Chron. 7:14 has been wrongly applied.  That prayer was given to Israel at the time it was given, it is to them and for them and has no application what so ever in our present day, unless of course America is the New Israel, which it isn't, so it doesn't apply.

I am bothered by how this kind of thinking has so permeated western christianity, especially American christianity... and promoted by so many... some have this type of thinking as the basis of their entire ministry and it's all based on a faulty understanding of scripture.

There is no such thing as God calling another Nation state to accomplish His will on the earth.  Israel was / is the only one and most of what they were about was fulfilled in the coming of the Messiah... God's people are now all who call on the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ no matter where in the world they may live.

The various results from such wrong headedness is that true Christianity as revealed by Jesus and His teachings in regards to the Kingdom of God has been commandeered by what I call Americanism... the new religion of American Ideals and Christianity being combined to create something that I don't think Jesus would recognize.    Jesus' kingdom says to love enemies, not bomb them, to do good to enemies, not destroy them, kill them.  Some how we have come to believe that America is righteous and all others are not.... and it's our obligation to destroy them.  War is inevitable in a fallen world, but from the teachings of Jesus I do not see anywhere that he taught that His followers should be a part of it for country sake.   A follower of Jesus, if Jesus is truly Lord, is to be aligned with one king only.... Him.... we are not to be involved in the Caesars of this world and their plans to dominate other Caesars ..... the work of the follower of Jesus is the same work that Jesus Himself was involved in.... promoting the Gospel of the Kingdom... i.e. The good news that Jesus' reign and rule is superior than all others..........
